One of the greatest pleasures of a motorhome holiday is the freedom to go wherever you want. Whilst you can, of course, include major cities and famous sights on your trip, you can also use this freedom to go off the beaten track; to turn away from the tourist hotspots and investigate some of the lesser-known – but no less fascinating – sights of the world. The Northern Lights
Many people assume that you have to go far, far to the north to see the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights; to Iceland, Norway or Canada. In fact, you can see them without leaving the UK. The Orkney Islands, at the northern end of Scotland, frequently see these spectacular light displays on clear nights, and (depending on atmospheric conditions) you may be able to see them further south, too. Our top tip if you’re set on seeing the Northern Lights is to stay away from the cities and stick to rural areas where you won’t need to worry about local light pollution.
Raven’s Rock Gorge
If you are a keen walker, then Scotland offers plenty of stunning, yet little known destinations. One of these is Raven’s Rock Gorge in Sutherland, which is an attractive, short walk, ideal for a day trip and easy enough for families. Raven’s Rock is managed by the Forestry Commission, and they also have details on hundreds of other stunning forests and forest parks that you can visit, so you’re bound to find one close to your planned destination. Remember to treat the forest with respect; take nothing but photographs and leave nothing but footprints, as they say!
Reindeer in Cairngorm
With Christmas looming ever closer on the horizon, you’ll see many images of reindeer on festive cards and ornaments, however if you want to meet Rudolph and his pals you don’t need to go all the way to the North Pole. You can, in fact, see a herd of reindeer right here in Scotland. The Cairngorm Reindeer Centre is open year round, with daily visits scheduled – but as they are allowed to roam freely, actually seeing the reindeer sometimes depends on whether the guides can find them!
