Winter may not be everybody’s cup of tea when it comes to choosing a holiday date, but that just means that settling for a winter holiday is a well-kept secret! There’s no getting around the fact that winter offers a different holiday experience to an excursion in the summer months, but in some ways the appeal of typical winter scenery is even more magical. Everyone loves crisp days and snow-hung boughs after all, so why not consider a winter vacation in a motorhome?
By going on holiday in the winter, you can be sure of a real rest, as you’ll avoid the crowds that can sometimes hassle you in the summer. Campsite prices will often be cheaper as well, so that’s at least two good reasons to plan a holiday in the ‘off season’! Fortunately, the UK has a lot of great destinations that are just perfect for a winter getaway. Here are a few of our favourites:
The Scottish Highlands
As a provider of motorhome hire in Scotland, we love the Highlands at all times of year, but if quiet solitude is your thing then pay this location a visit in the winter! There are lots of campsites sprawled across the Highlands, so if going on a trek in the wilderness sounds like a good way to unwind, then you couldn’t do better than the peaks, cliffs and generally great scenery of the Highlands.
The Lake District
Easily accessible and with an abundance of campsites, you surely knew that The Lake District just had to make our list right? The drama of the scenery here is supreme during the winter months, and it’s a haven for walking enthusiasts. It’s also a bit less barren than the Highlands, so you don’t have to feel quite so isolated if you don’t want to.
Snowdonia
We end our small selection of choices in Wales, but Snowdonia is by no means our ‘last-resort’ destination for winter campers. There’s so much to see and do in Snowdonia, including wildlife watching, visiting heritage sites and generally soaking in the incredibly diverse winter scenery, so there’s enough to keep the whole family occupied. As a National Park, Snowdonia is a must-visit.
Of course, if you’re going to be hiring a motorhome for the winter then we recommend that you wrap up warm in plenty of layers and maybe take a good heater along for the ride, but that should in no way put you off enjoying the UK’s landscapes at a less crowded time of year.
